Pebble Beach. Augusta National. Pine Valley. These are the cathedrals of golf - revered, historic courses that reflect the grandeur and competitive spirit of the sport. But what about Harleston's Green? Never heard of it? You might be surprised to learn that many historians count it as golf's most important venue because this one-time, undeveloped pasture in Charleston, South Carolina was the site of the first time golf was played in America.
That little known fact is the launching point for First Golf, a documentary that traces the roots of American golf, beginning in 1743, when Charleston resident David Deas received a shipment of 423 golf balls and 96 clubs from Scotland. From that day on, the city has never relinquished or forgotten its role as the birthplace of American golf.
First Golf will utilize beautifully executed re-creations, archival photographs, historical documents, and interviews with leading golf historians, course designers, and famous professionals to tell the amazing story of golf's growth and influence from Charleston to all of South Carolina and then across America.
First Golf is created and hosted by PGA Professional Charlie Rymer, whose South Carolina upbringing gives him a unique perspective and personal passion for golf in his beloved state.
South Carolina native and Grammy Award-Winning artist Darius Rucker will serve as an Executive Producer and the documentary will feature some of the biggest names in both golf and entertainment.
